Surely there are always electrician openings?
Then there's the issue of money. I don't want to get in to what I make but most electrician openings may have more stability but are far less than what I make. We're a single income family and it rests on my shoulders. It's one of those things where I have to ask "what's more valuable: money or happiness"?
And another big issue is I only work nights. If I were to walk away I'd be walking away from a sure thing. Basically, I have some big decisions to make in the next little while.
I'm an electrican but I know it's not career specific.
THere's been one guy clawing his way through my group and I feel like I'm the next target, because I'm one of the last
If I had somewhere else to go I'd be there tomorrow.
What exactly is the person doing?
Ravenheart is right. There are no doubt other openings in that job field. It's a specific trade that requires a person to be good at what they do. It's not like they just hire bums off the street like Target or Wal-Mart.
This guy's good a putting others down. Just last night he told me we had to get more plugs in a room. It was a last minute job that HAD to get done last night. I spent a few minutes trying to figure out where else on the floor I could get power for the plugs from so I wouldn't overload anything. He snapped at me to stop wasting time and just use what was in the room. So I did. I don't know if that one room was sharing power with five other rooms but I did it just to shut him up. It was on when I left but there was nothing plugged in to the plugs. Once they plug computers into those plugs who knows? It may trip circuits or nothing will happen. If nothing happens it'll be "things were fine but Adam was slower". If shit does start tipping he'll tell his boss I was the one who did it and therefor it's may fault. Then I can tell his boss I just did what he told me to do but I know his boss believes him over me. Because I overthink things. It takes me longer to do things but I've NEVER had a problem. This guy just does things and hopes for the best. Which takes less time and costs less. So what if a code or two are broken? All his boss cares about is that it's done cheaper. That's more valuable than safety or quality of work. "Do want it 'done' or do you want it 'done right'"? "No, I want it 'done right now'" is the philosophy he and his boss share and I don't work that way.
So right now I'm the target because I still do things right. It's my fault because I have a conscience and pride in what I do. But it's my downfall because I'm much slower. So this guy has a lot of opportunities to bury me deep and I know it's going to get me. "Adam's a slow worker, why is he still here?" I had a boss the last five years that was much more understanding to how I work but he had a bit of an emotional breakdown and kinda left myself and the rest of the crew to out own devices.
Yeah, I'm a slow electrician. But I only make the company $100 while this guy makes them $300. Who cares if the building burns down. As long as it doesn't happen within a year we're good because then the warrenty's expired.
Plus the new guy treats his workers like shit.
But thank you for the words of encouragement all. I've had a really bad year already so it's nice to get it off my chest.
