I watched Inglorious Bastards tonight. I do like all of Tarantinos films but I never got around to this one for some reason. I didn't like this one as much as the other. I'm not sure what it was but it was missing that certain something. I did like that since it was set in an era where it had no real bearing his (Tarantinos) blatant racism was very, very minimal (but it was still there). And the comedic violence was minimal too, which was fine with me. Mélanie Laurent was really good in her role. She was really the only character that stuck out to me. I guess Brad Pitt was good too. And Christoph Waltz was okay. I find he overly acts eccentric sometimes and I want to slap him. I didn't really care for the 'Bear Jew' character at all. His introduction was cool but after the first swing of the bat he was just...dumb. And I didn't like that they killed off two of the characters that interested me the most in the bar scene. The ending was good though. I had no idea that it was an alternate reality movie.

And Christoph Waltz was okay. Man, I'm surprised by a lot of what you said in that post, but this right here is just egregious. Waltz absolutely killed that role.

Trust me, he will never surpass what he did in IB & DU. He even admitted that his Blofeld in Spectre could've been so much better... The whole "avez-vous gouter le strudel" scene, especially when he switches a few seconds from mr charming to his deranged self, is worth alone it. I'm also very surprised that you didn't mention Fassbender, I discovered him via this movie.

My kids discovered the Real Ghostbusters cartoon is on Netflix so we've been watching that today. The one from the 1980's. It's pretty awesome and holds up.

Now You See Me 2 and The Magnificent Seven (2016). The former was the more entertaining.

Aliens, again. Honestly, so much of this movie is just perfect.
It's funny though how as you grow up, you appreciate different aspects of a good movie. I loved this one as a kid, but obviously because of the aliens and the action. Now I appreciate things like the development of the Gorman character, and the way they made cheap, fudged special effects look more convincing than some movies manage today.

The special effects are killer. They were in the original, too. I never liked how action oriented it was though. Too much of a departure from the original for me, and too revealing. Kind of like Hellraiser and Hellraiser II. When you show the audience too much of something it can lose its intrigue.

Yes and no. Doing the same thing as the original would have been pointless. You've already had the reveal. There's no intrigue left at that point, we now know what it is, what it's about, how it behaves, etc. They're basically two acts of the same story. Long, slow build up to the reveal in the first movie, take it further in the second, with the Queen being the reveal.
The first one starts strong, ends strong, but loses its way in the middle anyway. Still revolutionary.
Maybe Covenant will be be the first good Alien movie since the second one. But I doubt it. The trailer makes it look like a rehash of the first one.

Watched a low-budget recent sci fi last night called Robot Overlords, starring Ben Kingsley and Gillian Anderson. The usual plot holes and such, but not too bad.

Arrival. Not bad. But great. Loved that one. A very special film. It was alright. Good build up to a payoff that really wasn't as clever or impactful as it thought it was. Glad it didn't cost me anything

Avengers: Age of Ultron
By far the hole-iest MCU movie.
